Summer sun can make us dream about being tan and being thin, and while we may want to avoid any sun burn, most of us are interested in some serious fat burning. The latest research out of Boston University shows that we can burn fat most effectively by increasing the proportion of our fast twitch muscle mass. Despite the conventional wisdom that fatty acids fuel skeletal muscles during moderate exercise - like brisk walking - these new studies show that it’s really only high intensity interval training that burns away fat effectively. Simply put, you need to train intensely and build up your fast twitch ratios if you want to reduce body fat.

For a better understanding, our muscles are mixes of fast and slow twitch fibers. At the simplest level, the division of fast and slow twitch has to do with muscle contraction speed, and how fast the muscle fibers tire when they’re stimulated repeatedly. Fast twitch provides short bursts of power, while slow twitch provide continuous effort - like standing, maintaining posture or walking. Athletes frequently benefit from a genetic prevalence, as slow-twitch predominance can determine distance runners, cross country skiers or other endurance athletes; and fast twitch predominance can decide sprinters, ice hockey players, power lifters, or other athletes needing sudden, rapid bursts of strength. Genetic inheritance isn’t the only determiner, however.

These fast/slow metabolic characteristics of muscle fibers can be changed somewhat through training. Elite athletes benefit when they work both their fast twitch and slow twitch fibers by combining strength and endurance training. Endurance training can boost the aerobic capacity of some fast twitch fibers until they’re almost as resistant to fatigue as the slow twitchers. Likewise, serious, high intensity interval training can boost fast twitch fiber ratios.
