A New Whey to Diet

Dieting is a fight between mind, body and the body’s weight set point. The mind may ignore the existence of cookies and cake or dream of a smoking hot new look to sustain itself in battle, but the body responds by slowing down metabolism and stoking up hunger when it notices there are fewer calories around to burn up. This systemic response keeps weight at its biological set point. It’s evolutionary - an age old survival reaction to conserve energy when food is scarce. Evolution’s visit to a modern supermarket seems long overdue, and so is setting up a more helpful response to conserve will power when food is plentiful, and full of high fructose corn syrup.

Every dieter battles the dreaded plateau. Even an embattled weight set point is not easily reset. Keeping the weight set point aligns the liver, pancreas, thyroid, several brain centers; fat cells; and the secretion of insulin, ghrelin, leptin, growth hormone and PYY. Against this weight maintenance arsenal we cut out more calories and re-up exercise intensity. Our metabolisms respond by slowing to a pace resembling suspended animation; our imaginations obsess on food, and we feel tired, edgy, and eager to chew on anything.

According to Strength Conditioning Journal, studies show that increasing the protein portion of total calories consumed strengthens a dieter’s fight. “Proteins suppress hunger and boost metabolism better than carbohydrates or fats. Adding only 30 to 50 grams of protein to the diet (a two to three scoop whey protein shake) can help.

Let our whey protein feed your hunger and metabolism while you’re feeding your imagination and ego. If dieting is a war against our own weight set point, whey protein is one of the most effective weapons out there.
