Motivate Yourself

It may be harder to motivate yourself to do vigorous exercise - with the obvious exception of water sports – in summer’s blazing heat, but recent studies confirm that it’s also harder on your body. According to the latest Danish research, small increases in muscle temperature, amounts you’d get from warm up exercises, boost muscle performance, but more extreme heat increases muscle fatigue.

Our metabolisms are responsive to the demands on our bodies. While we’re busily exercising, our metabolisms are busy converting energy to fuel for cells that contract our muscles, send signals, control fluids and build tissue. The Danish studies confirmed that this metabolic response works best at body temps that are just a little above normal. As the body heats up more dramatically, metabolism gets less efficient because, in order to cool things down, blood gets diverted to the skin and we sweat. When there’s less blood available to deliver fresh oxygen to the exercising muscles, these muscles more easily fatigue. Doing endurance exercise in extreme heat can even heat up the brain, in some cases, which will also inhibit muscle contraction and easily cause fatigue.

By staying in better shape in general and by having a whey protein shake about 2 hours before exercising - made with water – you can keep yourself better hydrated, and keep your muscles better fed to prevent or at least battle against heat related muscle fatigue.
