Going uncivilized is modern ‘all natural’

In our complicated world, we’ve become obsessed with living more ‘naturally.’ The media connects ‘all natural’ to shampoo, drugs, toothpaste and dog biscuits. What’s more useful may be to look at our ancestors’ hunting and gathering life styles to see what an exercise and diet design rooted in that ancient, all natural life style has to teach us about modern biology. One lesson of the ages just may be that a modern athlete’s life is by far, and by example, the most natural, while also being the healthiest way to live.

The basics for a healthy life remain as they were back in the distant day. Going either retro or modern day, people prosper when they work their bodies, and eat a diet low in fat, salt, and refined carbs; high in fiber, lean protein and complex carbs. This was as true for our uncivilized hunter gatherer ancestors as it is today.

Comparing the two lifestyles shows some interesting differences:

Lean game eaten by the ancients was about 4.3% fat, with a high percentage being polyunsaturated, while modern supermarket meat averages around 25-35% saturated fat. Their plant foods had more fiber than ours, and the only sweet things they ate were berries and some honey. Whether men or women, they worked hard all day, and took in lots of low fat protein, which resulted in strength, musculature and aerobic fitness. Modern studies conducted in 5 traditional hunting and gathering societies from Africa and Australia found cholesterol ranging from 106 to 139, with normal blood pressure showing no increase with age.

We were designed for a more rigorous, Spartan life. Civilization has made that harder. If that treadmill or those heavy weights feel unnatural, think of yourself carrying around 50 pounds of kids or vegetables, or hauling some large game through miles of hillside brush in the heat of the day, day after day.
