We’re all excited about the Beijing Olympics at ATW. As thoroughbred athletes all over the
world are getting ready to compete, we want to help you get ready to enjoy it all, and let it inspire you to train hard, and push yourself to that next level.
Olympic athletes look for every edge. US swimmers will be wearing new, seamless wet suits – welded together ultrasonically- that NASA designed to hold each swimmer’s body in the best position possible, for unparalleled buoyancy and a predicted 4% faster race. The Beijing pool has the latest in anti-wave lane markers so the swimming races should be done in a flash of world records. The runners will be wearing Nike Zoom Victory sneakers, the lightest, toughest spikes ever made, with suede used instead of foam, and a hole cut in the heal to deliver hypersonic speed. Because most of the body’s energy goes to heat regulation, Nike has produced a PreCool Vest, a custom fit, contoured jacket of ice packs. By lowering core temp before an event, an athlete should be able to last 21 percent longer for any endurance sport. If you can’t get what the latest technology has produced, you know that all these athletes train with whey protein and creatine and aminos and vitamins and all the best sports nutrition products that you can get from All the Whey.
Behind all the years of training and preparation for their personal bests are the stories of how these Olympic athletes relate to each other, and the rivalries at the heart of each of these events. Here are some Olympic fun facts as the games are about to begin, and you’re getting your TIVO’s Beijing ready:
Men’s 200, 400 individual and 100, 200 backstroke swimming: Two friends that are also the two fastest swimmers in US history put it on the line. Phelps is a by-the-book Olympic champion with 6 gold and 8 Olympic medals; $5 million in sports endorsements; and a chance to win the most Gold medals in Olympic history if he can nail 4 out of his 8 events.... but a broken wrist has hampered him recently. Lochte is his wild cowboy friend – they text
each other daily - with 2 golds of his own from Athens, who’s been consistently gaining speed and notice as Phelps has been floundering. The 200 indiv should be an amazing battle between them.
Mens’s 100 meter track finals: First, Jamaican Powell set the world record. Then USA’s Gay was so far ahead in the world championship race that Powell stopped running mid-race. Another Jamaican, Bold, beat Gay after that, and all 3 will be at it in Beijing.
Women’s 50 meter freestyle: USA’s Torres is 41, and a 9 time Olympic medalist who will be the 1st swimmer to ever appear in 5 Olympics – competing this time against girls more than ½ her age.
Women’s beach volleyball: USA’s May-Treanor and Walsh have dominated the sport with 89 straight victories. The Brazilians, Silva and Franca, are powerhouses on a different circuit. These teams rarely compete against each other, but they’ll face each other in Beijing.
Boxing – watch USA’s Wilder – he quit school to work at a restaurant in the day and a factory at night to pay his daughter’s medical bills. He’s a fighter in and out of the
ring.
Tae Kwon Do – watch the Lopez family – two brothers and a sister – the 1st trio of siblings ever to compete in the Olympics.
Badminton – USA’s Bach and Malaythong- who bat the shuttlecock at 250 mph- will go against the favored Chinese. Both came to the US as children – one from Laos and one from Vietnam, and they’ve become like brothers on and off this faster than light court.
1500 and 5000 meter track – watch Lagat, a medalist for Kenya, who is now a US citizen and promises to win gold for the red, white and blue.
Women’s soccer - watch USA’s Solo, the goalie. In high school she switched from making goals to keeping them out. After lots of drama during the World Cup – yelling at her coach and then being shunned by the team - she’s got something to prove.
10 –k Open Water Marathon debut – here’s a 6.2 mile race that’s as combative as water polo, and takes 2 hrs. Swimmers grease their feet so they can’t be yanked, wear suits with pockets to hold gel packed nutrition and grab drinks that coaches dangle over the water.
bmx racing debut - watch USA’s Robinson – he’s been racing since he was 6 always competing against older, bigger guys. With training as a gymnast, he learned how to win.
javelin – watch USA’s Greer – known as Hurricane - this 8 time US champion switched from being a pitcher on a high school baseball team to throwing a javelin. His qualifying throw for the last Olympics was farther than the gold medal throw, but he tore his ACL doing it, and then fouled both his Olympic throws.
These may not be your favorite sports, but they’ll be fun to watch. Have your ATW protein or other ATW pre work out supplements, watch the Olympic athletes push it, and then get at it yourself.
